CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

Allie rang Kenny Webb before she ventured over to Longton, wanting to ensure he was there. She wondered if he’d be his usual jovial self, hoping that his friendliness would throw her off the scent. It never worked, even though she’d left him thinking it had on many occasions.

The door to his office was open wide, to let some fresh air in, she assumed.

‘We’ll have to stop meeting like this, Inspector,’ Kenny joked as she stepped inside.

‘People you know keep dying,’ Allie retorted with a shrug.

‘Yeah, joking aside. I was shocked to hear about Kit. Anything I can do to help, consider it done.’

‘As it’s one of your employees, again, then I thought I’d stop by to get some background.’

Allie filled him in with the details she could. ‘What can you tell me about Kit?’ she finished.

‘Him and Scott had worked here for a couple of months. They took over for me. Kit was a good worker, got on well with the lads and the customers. I liked him a lot.’

‘Did he make any enemies while he was here?’

Kenny shook his head. ‘He was one of the most affable blokes I’d met. Scott was the dodgy one. Kit always kept his nose clean.’

‘When you say Scott was dodgy?’ Allie encouraged him to say more, always keen to hear his musings.

‘I don’t mean in the illegal sense, Inspector. Kit was the better worker of the two. Scott would often be found out of office when Kit was doing the manual stuff. Kit never complained to me about it, though. Perhaps that’s the way their working relationship was. I’ll miss him. He was a great bloke.’ He pointed to an envelope on the top of a filing cabinet. ‘The lads have had a whip-round for his lady. Raised nearly a grand throughout all the branches. I’m going to add a couple of hundred to it.’

Allie nodded, liking his gesture. ‘That’s a lot of money for a collection,’ she queried.

‘That’s how much we take care of our own.’

She stared at him pointedly. He was telling her that Kit was okay, they would have looked after him as a worker and that perhaps they had nothing to do with his death. But she knew from experience, it could all be for show. Still, she had no evidence to the contrary at the moment so she would keep her options open.

‘Tell me why Kit and Scott,’ she said.

‘We’re expanding the car washes, and I needed people in here I could trust while I set up two new branches.’

‘Business that good?’ She tried to hide the sarcasm in her tone. Knowing the scene behind closed doors, Allie wanted it to fold, to stop making them illegal money. But she had to bide her time until the drugs squad gave them the nod to raid it all. It was taking so long, though, each tiny piece of evidence being stored towards the bigger picture.

‘I can’t complain,’ Kenny replied.

‘Do you think Kit and Scott would have made a success of it here?’

‘I do.
